On March 8, 2020, The Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said the Russian animal and phytosanitary quarantine agency had sent an official notice to the department, allowing imports of Vietnamese processed chicken products.

To make inroads into the selective market, Vietnamese firms need to meet strict standards on raising, slaughtering and processing, as well as ensuring biological and food safety, disease-free products, and traceability.

“The big painting”

As soon as Vietnam allowed to import pork from Russia, the Russian Federal Plant and Animal Health Quarantine Department also officially announced the permission to import processed chicken from Vietnam. Currently, C.P Vietnam Corporation – A chicken processing factory in Chuong My district, Hanoi, has become the first business in Vietnam to be licensed to export processed chicken products to Russia.

Challenges for Vietnam

Companies should abide by World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the Russian Federation’s principles of disease safety, abide by food safety requirements following international practices and Russia.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Director of Department of Animal Health in Vietnam said before being allowed to import processed chicken products to Russia, Department of Animal Health had worked with Russian Federation authorities to prove the capacity and ability to meet the requirements, standards of Russia as well as OIE on disease safety, food safety.

At the end of October 2019, Russian Veterinary Department’s members came to Vietnam and visited the production facilities of the businesses here and highly appreciated the technology that these companies were applying.

One of the greatest efforts of the Vietnam Veterinary Medicine in recent years is building and maintaining disease safety on areas and livestock facilities. This is an important condition to be able to export chicken. Currently, the whole country has built 32 disease-free areas, including 31 districts and 1 province. Moreover, there are 138 additional disease free areas at commune level and 1,662 disease free areas at farm level. In 2019, there will be 221 facilities, production chains and livestock area have been certified for disease safety.

The most important thing is that the Department of Animal Health of both sides have reach a consensus for the form of quarantine certificate the conditions of disease safety, food safety and and both have been accepted. In the near future, Russian authorities will complete. In the near future, Russian authorities will complete procedures that allow Vietnamese companies export processed chicken to Russia.

In Vietnam now, there are many companies in manufacturing, livestock, poultry processing that are capable of exporting to Russia markets.

Development potential

Compliance with the raising, slaughtering, processing chicken in chains, ensuring biosecurity, disease safety, food safety standard and traceability not only meets export market requirements but also expand the export market of animal food in general.

According to experts, now that Vietnam is allowed to export processed chicken to Russia means Vietnam could also export to other EAEU (the Eurasian Economic Union) members, including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan.

Businesses must also meet other criteria and technical barriers from Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
